Since November 2010 Roman Obermaisser is full professor for embedded systems at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of the University of Siegen in Germany. Please have a look at the homepage of the chair of embedded systems for updated information on research activities.

Roman Obermaisser has studied Computer Sciences at the Vienna University of Technology and received the Dipl.-Ing. (Master's) degree in 2001. In February 2004, Roman Obermaisser has finished his doctoral studies in Computer Science with Prof. Hermann Kopetz at the Technische Universität Wien as research advisor. In July 2009, Roman Obermaisser has received the habilitation ("Venia docendi") certificate for Technical Computer Science, Vienna University of Technology, Austria.

Research

Roman Obermaisser's research includes the following topics:

System Architectures for Distributed Embedded Real-Time Systems
Roman Obermaisser's resarch in the field of system architectures for distributed embedded real-time systems focuses on issues such as real-time guarantees, communication services, distribution and fault-tolerance. Roman Obermaisser is the technical coordinator of the FP7-ICT collaborative project GENESYS (GENeric Embedded SYStem Platform). The GENESYS project has started on January 1st 2008 and is aiming to give birth to novel technologies for embedded computer systems that are of universal importance across individual application domains. The research results will enable significant improvements concerning time-to-market, cost, and robustness for a wide range of applications, from mobile phones to safety-critical computers in airplanes. This ambitious goal is supported by 23 project partners from all over Europe. The project partners include major European companies like Nokia, Infineon, Thales, ST Microelectronics, NXP Semiconductors, and Volvo. In addition leading universities and research institutes contribute to the GENESYS.  
Communication Infrastructure of Integrated Computer Systems
In the FP6 integrated project Dependabe Embedded Components and Systems (DECOS)  project Roman Obermaisser has been responsible for a work package developing the communication infrastructure of an integrated system architecture for embedded real-time systems. Coordinated by Austrian Research Center in Seibersdorf (ARC), the consortium of the DECOS project has consisted of 19 partners from academia and industry, including such prominent companies like Airbus, Audi, EADS, Fiat, and Infineon. DECOS has developed the basic enabling technology to move from a federated distributed architecture to an integrated distributed architecture for dependable embedded control systems.  
Time-Triggered Communication Protocols
Time-triggered communication protocols are generally preferred for safety-critical systems. For example, in the automotive industry a time-triggered architecture will provide the ability to handle the communication needs of by-wire cars. In addition to hard real-time performance, time-triggered architectures help in managing the complexity of fault-tolerance and corresponding formal dependability models, as required for the establishment of ultra-high reliability (failure rates in the order of 10-9 failures/hour). The predetermined points in time of the periodic message transmissions allow error detection and establishing of membership information. Redundancy can be established transparently to applications, i.e. without any modification of the function and timing of application systems. A time-triggered system also supports replica determinism, which is essential for establishing fault-tolerance through active redundancy.
